Ep 15: The Truth About Hypnotherapy

Whatever cold or sinus issues that I have would be gone by the time I went to record this [00:01:00] podcast, but they are not however, it is a whole lot better than it was at the beginning of the week. So when that is ready to be launched, I will get you the link to sign up for that as well. So in today's episode, we're going to dive into hypnotherapy. What hypnotherapy is what people commonly think that it is what it isn't and what it can do for you when it comes to you creating a life that you actually want to live. Or changing your habits or changing your identity. How you perceive yourself, how you show up in the world and. Really take something that is hard for you to consciously do. Or consciously create a habit of and make it super simple. To do. So let's just dive into the episode. What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy in short[00:03:00] is relaxing. The body. And the conscious mind so that you can talk directly to the subconscious. And reprogram. The subconscious mind. Now the subconscious mind is the part of your mind. That controls 95%. Of your daily thoughts, behaviors, and actions. Okay. So 95%. Of your life. You live on autopilot. You develop habits over time because your brain. And your body are looking for the path of least resistance. They want things to be easy. So as you're creating these habits, you're also creating neural pathways. When we talk about neural pathways, I want you to think about the grand canyon. Okay. So the grand canyon was carved out of this stone and rock over a long period of time. The water was constantly eroding and eroding and eroding until that canyon was formed. And this [00:04:00] is how your neurotransmitters and your neural pathways work. There's this common saying " neurons that fire together wire together". And that is, essentially, creating a grand canyon in your brain. Okay. So the water's going to follow the path of least resistance and create a canyon or a river bed. Now in order to change these neural pathways, you have to start doing something different, and when you start doing something different, We are diverting the water and creating a different path until that path is carved out. So in order for you to create new habits, you have to create a new neural pathway and you have to strengthen that pathway to become stronger than the pathway before it, and as you are changing that over, the stronger pathway starts to become weaker and weaker. If you don't [00:05:00] use it, you lose it. Right. Now what that means for us is that, yes, we can absolutely create new habits and new ways of thinking through using our willpower, through checking boxes every day, through making a conscious effort to change something until it becomes second nature. We absolutely have that option. What hypnotherapy does is relax the conscious mind and the body so that we can talk directly to the subconscious mind where all of these programs are stored. Everything that we use to run our day is stored in our subconscious mind. How we brush our teeth, how we drink our water, how we walk, how we sit in the car, the way that we see ourselves, the way we perceive ourselves, the thoughts that we have, the things that we say to ourselves, how we say them. 95% of that is all stored in the subconscious mind and it takes no conscious [00:06:00] effort. So by talking directly to the subconscious mind, we are able to change those neural pathways in an instant. All it takes is a command. And you are relaxed and able to absorb that new command and your subconscious mind loves following orders. We have this new command. We have this new trigger. So now it's effortless to do whatever it is that you're wanting to change. And once that effortlessness is there and you begin to run that program, that neural pathway becomes strengthened each time you do it. So now all of a sudden something that was so hard for us to do. Like quit smoking. Or start going to the gym. Or see ourselves differently. those things can be changed in an instant, and then we're strengthening the neural pathway after. Instead of using willpower, which is like trying to climb up a mountain barefoot in a blizzard with [00:07:00] an avalanche coming straight at you. So. Before we go any further, I also want to mention that the state of hypnosis is a natural state that we all go in and out of throughout our day. For example, have you ever been driving your car and you get to your destination and you're like, "oh my gosh, I don't remember like half of that drive." Have you ever been watching TV and all of a sudden you don't know where the last two hours have gone? Have you ever been scrolling on your phone and all of a sudden it's three o'clock in the morning and you're like, "oh my gosh, where did that time go?" You were in a state of trance.
And trance is simply lowering your brainwave state. Our waking state, where we are actively doing things you are more than likely in a beta state right now. Beta brainwave state is our waking state. And then we get into alpha state, which is more of a heightened awareness which is a lower brainwave frequency. It [00:08:00] is also called the learning state or haukalau because in the state you are able to learn better. You're able to retain better and you're able to recall better. And then we get into theta state, which is where we want you for hypnosis. This is a much more relaxed state. Your brainwaves are lower and you are more receptive. Now. Hypnotherapy is not like stage hypnosis. You're not being hypnotized with a swirling black and white spiral. I'm not waving a pendulum or a pocket watch in front of your eyes. I'm not going to make you get up on stage and dance around like a chicken or bark like a puppy dog. That's not what we do. In fact, stage hypnosis and stage hypnotist pick out the people who are likely to be the class clown or likely to just want to show out. And they're trained to do that because the subconscious mind is a highly moral part of you and it's not going to allow you to do [00:09:00] anything that feels unsafe when you are in hypnosis. And that's a really good thing to know. Because there are so many people who think that they're going to be hypnotized and do something crazy, like rob a bank and that's just not the case. And just to point out also. Because I know that there is a fear that somebody who goes into trance will never wake up from trance. Nobody's ever not woken up from trance. And it's important also to find somebody, a hypnotherapist or hypnotist that you feel safe around. That you trust to create a safe space for you. So, what is the process of hypnosis look like? If you've never been hypnotized before. That process can look like going through an interview. Figuring out what it is that you are wanting to change in your life. What positive qualities you want to instill what more negative or limiting qualities that you're wanting to [00:10:00] remove. . Then you might go through some tests just to prove how hypnotizable you really are. And one of those tests that I really, really love because we can do it anywhere is called the lemon test and I'll do it right now just to demonstrate it. So I want you, if it is safe for you to do so, close your eyes for just a moment, and imagine yourself sitting in your favorite chair in your most favorite place in your house. And imagine getting up from that chair and walking into your kitchen. You walk into your kitchen and reach out and grab the refrigerator handle. As you open the refrigerator. You notice a bowl sitting on the shelf. And in that bowl, are beautiful yellow lemons. You grab one of those lemons. Feeling the peel on your skin. And you take that lemon. And you pull out a cutting board and a knife. Lay it all on the counter. And take that lemon in your hand. You take the knife and very carefully, [00:11:00] cut the lemon in half. And you cut the lemon in half again. Sure. Into little slices. And then take one of those slices of lemon and bring it up to your mouth and take a big bite. And open your eyes. I don't know about you, but my mouth instantly starts watering any time that I even think about lemons. And that's part of the Psycho-Cybernetics process. So just our thoughts can create feelings and begin processes in our body. And feelings and processes in our body can create feelings and thoughts. So it's all a part of this big, endless cycle that our body goes through and we're just tapping into a natural state. Where we can speak to directly to our subconscious mind. And when we speak to our subconscious mind, Which is, like I said, that part of our mind that controls 95% of our daily thoughts, behaviors, and activities. [00:12:00] When we're able to change those things. We are able to then change how will the world around us works because what we perceive the world to be is a direct reflection of whatever's stored in our subconscious mind, they provide the filters the glasses through which we see the entire world. That's why you and I can be at the same exact event doing the same exact thing, and have different recollections of that event because what's important to you may not be important to me. And what you're picking up on based on your model of reality is different than what I'm picking up on based on my model of reality. So if you don't like your model of reality, if you don't like the way that the world is around you. If you don't like what you're picking up through your filters we can change your filters. You change your filters, you changed the way that you're perceiving the world. You're changing the way that you [00:13:00] view opportunities you're changing the way that you react to things you're changing, the way that you behave. You're going to get a different outcome. So I think I went off a little bit on a tangent, but hypnotherapy is an amazing tool. Especially if on a conscious level, you're not able to figure out what's going on because we can access the subconscious mind and rewire and reprogram that way.
